Just a quick glance over the chart and they made a lot of money.

EDIT: By my estimates, they made roughly 94k (including the $0.30 tax from Paypal) from 57k sales . So they made $1.50 for each game sold... but the majority of the revenue would not have even existed if it wasn't for this experiment.

Looks like 2DBoy came out as winners.

Yup.

Also... they see 25% fluctuations in Steam sales every so often... had a 25% increase before this sale, 40% increase during. Biggest Steam numbers in months.

Seems they did alright for themselves, it's interesting that Steam sales rose by 40%.

That histogram adds up to ~$135k, but that's before paypal fees/taxes and I could have done a much better estimate had I actually read the blog post

It boggles my mind you not only thought it appropriate to pay 0,01 (instead of say $1) AND you thought the internet might want to know what kind of a jerk you are.

To be fair, all penny sales, all 30 cent or less sales, and a portion of the other sales need to be removed.

First off; I didn't know they had to give Paypal any fees, I thought it was a donation. Secondly, I had no interest in even playing this game, but I gave a $1 because I support this business model and I felt they deserved something for their efforts.

I've played the game once since I purchased it and have had zero interest to go back to it after putting about 5 minutes in. It's just not for me, but I'd gladly support a developer who tries something new.

I'm on chapter 4 now, which is my favorite chapter so far. I have skipped 2 stages though, one in chapter 1 and one in chapter 3

Some graphs I made (which take into account the Paypal tax of $0.30)

Total revenue: ~$94k

Highest revenue based on range
$5.00 - $5.99: ~$28k
$1.00 - $1.99: ~$17k
$10.00 - $10.99: ~$16k

How much of a difference $1.49 makes...
$0.01: ~$118 from ~ 17,000 buys
$1.00 - $1.99: ~$17,000 from ~ 16,000 buys

Those revenues look insane. I assume all development costs are already fully covered by previous sales coming from wiiware, steam and their own site, since the game is a year old by now. So that leaves everything they get in this one "special week" as 100% profit? 2DBoy = 2 people (also assuming all contractors have been paid), so $47k each in the pocket.

nice.
I have a feeling I might be terribly wrong here.
I'm still not sure whether to rebuy it on Wiiware or not.

The people who pay $0.01 are an important part of the experiment. They absolutely exist, whether they are vocal about it or not. The fear from a business is that EVERYONE will do it, but it is clearly not what the case has shown to be.

I paid $0.01 and I'm not ashamed to say it.

I'd already paid the $10 for the Wii version, so whatever.

I am shocked they allowed the game to be sold at a loss. They should have made the minimum payment $0.99 just so they aren't losing money by selling their game.

At the very least they should have a script setup so all purchases under $0.31 are not sent through paypal at all, they are better off just not charging you and giving it away for free if you won't pay over 30 cents.

I picked it up for $9.99, which to me, is a fair price for a puzzle game which isn't Plants vs Zombies.

reading comprehension:

2d boy didn't lose the money on the $0.01 sales, PayPal did. And really, you're doing the world a favor if you can cause a net loss for PayPal.

"All development costs" and "100% profit" is a little bit of a skewed perspective. They don't only have to pay their bills from the past. Ideally, in order for their little company to be healthy, they have to pay the bills until their next game comes out. Also they will probably need some extra money in case their next game isn't as successful as World of Goo. I don't believe they are looking into buying a new Mercedes right now. Then again perhaps they do.

...

The 0.01$ crowd also gets the jackass vote from me. I don't care about if it is allowed or not. I don't care about morals. I don't care if you are not really interested in the game. If you took 10 minutes out of your life to get the game and paid less than a dollar then you are the definition of uncool. Probably nobody wants to hang out with you and you stink. I hope that someday you will become real adults.

Bandwidth-costs add up quite a bit as well. The game is about 100MB to download, take 100.000 people and that's 10 TB's of data. That's a pretty pricy bill.

Aparently 2D Boy deal sold 83,250:

And guess what?! Brasil is the most gererous country!

See developers?! Brasilians love games!
We are willing to pay a decent price for them and not the ridiculous amount we are obligated to. :/

Just thought I'd chime in that I haven't really been playing much on my Mac. The game looks nice and I 'get' it, but the controls don't seem that great (feels like it was a Wii game or something - like having to scroll by moving the pointer to the edge of the screen), hasn't really nabbed me, I'm afraid.

Don't feel that compelled to finish world 1.
